The Actor's Jesus-Themed Horror Movie Isn't as Wild Than Expected

The acclaimed actor could be the ideal selection for a daring scary movie focused on Jesus Christ, but not for the reasons some viewers could guess. In reality, the star doesn't even play the central religious figure in The Carpenter’s Son: his character is listed merely as The Carpenter. The actor is framed as a father figure in this story, attempting to maintain his religious convictions while his son (acted by the young actor), their adolescent foster child, begins to display supernatural abilities. Why it's hard to envision another leading star in this role is that even as the role is burdened with various trials, the actor seems almost touchingly certain that this dark, grim small film is worth his time.

Cage's Recent Film Selections

Nicolas Cage was using those years more carefully lately. He yet does additional projects than most regular audiences will ever see — as an illustration, did you know that he has filmed several separate Westerns in the past three years? — however he also includes esteemed A24/Neon gigs for example one recent hit, Pig, and a further title. The Carpenter’s Son seems like in that category, in that it’s genre-adjacent, likely to stir debate, and handles a campy-sounding premise quite seriously.

Movie's Premise and Direction

Sadly, filmmaker Lotfy Nathan does not reward the audience's focus. The Carpenter’s Son starts from a interestingly wandering context, presented as based on an unknown scripture regarding the youthful days of the messiah. The Carpenter, the maternal figure, and the boy move from place to place, afraid of doctrinal intolerance or suspicion about their son's mysterious gifts. “Calamity follows us,” The Carpenter sadly observes. This persists as sinister entities target the household in their latest settlement, getting a jump-start on the well-known scriptural test for The Boy.

At times, the movie mirrors an Exorcist-style possession movie, except that not one of the main figures are directly possessed. Instead, they become progressively isolated from one another, as these entities infect a nearby girl (the actress, listed as “The Stranger”) who the son bonds with, and provides each character disturbing images of a grim future. The Carpenter notably fights with his role within the plot, sometimes chastising the boy he can’t fully understand.

Controversy and Caution

The subject matter is apt to court controversy, and the director treats it with a lot of care — too much, maybe. The concept of a teenage boy facing his eventual sacrifice and lured by mysterious forces is certainly terrifying, but Nathan might be cautious about seeming gratuitous and keen to telegraph his goals, thus he frequently retreats into gloomily threatening filming. The roles continually reflect — FKA Twigs, who showed genuine potential in another movie, interestingly — yields her performance to her Mother Mary cloak, occasionally interrupted by a few gruesome scary visuals.

Cage's Portrayal and Film's Flaws

At the same time, Cage dabbles in just the sort of exaggerated performance that his ironic fans could be expecting. There is a moment (featured) in promotional material in which he flips out and shouts “My faith has been shattered!” Should such of theatrical release is part of a biblical thriller, maybe a more brazenly silly style would be more effective of his eagerness to exaggerate if needed. Instead, the film more closely resembles the poorer low-budget movies the actor filmed during the last decade — apart from the B-movies instead the serious stories and supernatural thrillers that typically appear interesting, and frequently include some select memorable scenes, but finally come across like, well, inexpensive direct-to-consumer content.

Truthfully, several of these, though not as grand, were more entertaining in general. This is when I have to disregard my own dogma, not religious but career-related: Previously, a beloved editor persuaded me to remove descriptive terms like “boring” or “dull” from my analytical lexicon. These words express scant but a subjective and broadly stated lack of patience, withdrawing from the task of vibrantly communicating the thoughtful and feeling of seeing a particular movie. It's challenging to express tedium without appearing dull personally. It’s no more expressive as labeling a movie “notable.” “Elaborate,” that is.

However, I admit, I was bored during much of The Carpenter’s Son. To the movie’s non-exploitative credit, it’s a churchy kind of stultification, not due to The Carpenter’s Son is moralizing, but since it demands a type of obedient endurance to sit through it. Eventually early on, the film locks into a monotonous pattern of ongoing suffering, and fails to
