Fiona Shaw Discusses Her Career: From Star Wars to Wizarding World

In a recent interview, acclaimed actress Fiona Shaw shared insights about her diverse career covering multiple decades and iconic roles.

Andor's Powerful Speech

When discussing her memorable eulogy scene in the Star Wars series Andor, Shaw disclosed that the initial version contained stronger language. "I did say a different word in my speech," she explained, "and the writer wanted the studio would approve it."

The actress detailed the unusual shooting circumstances for this specific moment. "When I performed that speech, I was filmed by about 200 cameras for making a hologram. I was entirely by myself in a huge soundstage, with no director or production team present in the room."

Jane Austen Adaptations

Speaking about the forthcoming adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, Shaw expressed excitement about finishing production. "We've just finished shooting it," she mentioned, "though performers rarely witness is the completed movie."

The actress commended director Georgia Oakley as "truly wonderful and quite confident." The production took place in beautiful estates across the UK, including locations in Dorset, Knebworth, and Devonshire.

Shaw also reflected on her previous role in the nineties version of Persuasion, portraying Mrs. Croft. "Our filmmaker had specific requirements: without hairpieces and just candle illumination," she remembered. "He truly aimed to capture the experience of early 19th century life."

Wizarding World Reflections

In response to questions regarding her time in the wizarding film series, Shaw spoke fondly about working with the late Richard Griffiths. "He represented the most elegant, artistic and talented man," she revealed. "He had the most beautiful penmanship and once sent me a note asking to lunch in elaborate gothic lettering."

She described Griffiths as constantly speaking and sharing fascinating anecdotes with both her and the young actors on set. "He possessed fantastic general knowledge so we would sit enthralled by his tales."

Stage Performances

Discussing her Broadway performance in Medea, Shaw remembered how psychologically challenging the production was. "I met one of the ensemble actors several years after, who said: 'I'm not over it yet,'" she disclosed.

The production had an extensive run, beginning in Ireland, then moving to London, followed by the American capital, the New York venue, and finally Broadway. "We became quite bonded as a company," she added.

Approach to Acting

Regarding inquiries concerning her ability to transition between humor and seriousness, Shaw explained that "humor unites people as it's about rupturing the norm." Nevertheless, she admitted that "prior to a comedy, I always rest badly, because you have to find the rhythm during performance."

Concerning her method for approaching various roles, Shaw commented: "I discover each one difficult. But even if the character you're portraying is rather different from you, there is frequently some aspect about them that you identify with."

Recent Work

Speaking about her latest role in the production Hot Milk, Shaw characterized her character Rose as "a terrible woman though you cannot perform anything from that viewpoint." She explained that Rose experiences a nervous system condition that makes walking difficult.

"She is unaware of the effect she creates on her daughter," Shaw noted. "Her only concern is that she wants to improve. She's well-intentioned yet unaware. Perhaps that's what most of us are."

Personal Reflections

When told that audiences perceive her ideal as authority figure characters, Shaw answered with humor: "Goodness me! I'm really not intimidating. But maybe when infused with purpose, my features might seem threatening."

The actress continued: "In reality sometimes quite scatty so perhaps it's therapeutic for me to play highly intellectual, organized characters. I try to depict fascinating individuals so I never judge them. Don't be scared – come and say hello!"

Love for Language

Talking about her renowned performance of the poetic work The Waste Land, Shaw conveyed her profound relationship with words and verse. "My heart is always in the language," she stated, "because the clues to everything are contained within the selection of vocabulary."

The actress thinks that "poetry represents the polished form of language, or the moment that has been captured." When people boil down to what they genuinely wish to express, it's often poetic."

Audiobook Work

Regarding her praised spoken-word performances, specifically the classic Alice in Wonderland, Shaw revealed that "I enjoyed recording Alice in Wonderland because I included all my acquaintances into it – my friends and other actors."

The actress explained how she performed the caterpillar as inspired by Alan Rickman, and characterized the Red Queen evoking Geraldine McEwan. "It consistently feels a honor to record and perform literature," she finished, "though it requires extended periods of work."

Collaborating with the Director

Recalling her experience working with renowned director Terrence Malick on his film Tree of Life, Shaw portrayed him as distinctive. "Everything Terrence Malick expresses and undertakes is different," she observed.

She shared a specific recollection of their initial encounter: "He left a message on my answering machine which said, 'I wonder, would you come and help with my film?' We went out for breakfast. He said, 'Well, what are you going to have?' I said, 'I'm going to have scrambled eggs.' He said, 'I think I'll have scrambled eggs too,' like it was the most unusual selection in the world."

The actress also described Malick's distinctive method of asking actors "Would you prefer to do this scene inside or outside?" – inquiries seldom made by other filmmakers. "He exclusively used natural light," she continued, "meaning actors could perform inside by a window or outside on the street."

Regarding the lengthy post-production, Shaw revealed that "The director requires about three years to complete the movie. I had heard from the producer after two years that I was likely among the primary roles, but by the time the film was released, I was nearly gone."

The actress finished by characterizing Malick's unique process: "He builds this enormous structure, and he removes most elements. He essentially deconstructs films."
