Community Members Seeking Answers About Hazardous Substances Sites

A local mother and her partner received heartbreaking diagnosis in 2018 when their toddler their child was confirmed to have a rare type of leukaemia.

An extended period of demanding therapies ensued, including chemotherapy, targeted radiation, and immune system treatments before a bone marrow procedure. The young boy, then aged three, made a extraordinary turnaround from the procedure, with doctors confirming the cancer in recovery.

During this period that Gaffney, aged thirty-six, began seeking causes. She constantly recalled observations made by hospital staff at the time of her Fraser's condition. “We're tormented wondering how Fraser got his cancer,” a consultant had informed her.

“We can't sleep wondering how Fraser got his disease,” a specialist had shared with her.

Background Information

The botched disposal of millions of tonnes of toxic materials after the cessation of the town's primary employer in this community in 1979 had “always been a known thing,” said Alison. A legal proceeding linked the council’s negligent clean-up of the site to a cluster of developmental issues in community youth during the previous decades.

Over time, Gaffney started to connect the circumstances to her own. “[Fraser’s cancer] is not inherited,” she explained. “So what are the reasons? … It must be down to the community. All these kids [with] the disease.

“Everybody in this town knows someone who’s got a youngster [with] the disease. This isn't typical.”

Collective Efforts

Alison and Andy started to reach out to more parents in the town with parallel situations – featuring some of Alison's ex-school friends at Brooke Weston Academy – and the organization began gathering comprehensive documentation on those involved. They now head a movement advocating for about 130 families with situations of childhood cancer starting from 1988.

The organization has been pressuring the town council to investigate any connections between instances of childhood cancer in this community and the closure of the plant. Soon, health authorities are set to publish their evaluation of whether the community has had a disproportionate number of occurrences of pediatric illness for its inhabitants of the local community.

“What we seek is to try and protect future people so they do not have to endure the pain that we've endured,” said Gaffney.

Legal Precedents

The ruling in the court proceeding recognized that, between 1983 and 1997, enormous amounts of contaminated materials from the steel plant were moved “regularly” from the south of Corby to a specific location in the northern section – with “substantial volumes” of contaminated substances moved and deposited on local thoroughfares and “considerable amounts” of dust generated by the remediation.

Nevertheless, it also cited findings from the regulatory body in 1997 that identified stockpiles of toxic substances that had been deposited at Deene Quarry were later extracted in “significant amounts”.

Expanding Concerns

Gaffney believes contaminated materials was not exclusively placed at the primary location but in other parts of the community. Lately, she applauded a “significant progress” after North Northamptonshire council said it would test soil that could be contaminated and research where toxic waste was disposed of.

The mother said council staff confirmed in the discussion that they did not know where the sites of hazardous substances could be. “They said: ‘We lack information where these areas are. There are no records, we have nothing on it.’”

Community Support

The council’s announcement was also welcomed by another parent, a pastoral lead at a primary school, whose school-aged girl, Bella, was found to have a hematologic malignancy in recent months.

“I needed to cut my nine-year-old daughter's scalp because her hair was falling out from the drugs she had to administer to destroy her disease. Therefore it’s in everyone's benefit, it’s in her daughter's welfare [for the council] to disclose that data,” she stated.

“There are so many people in the area that have been confirmed to have childhood cancer and It seems it’s cannot be dismissed – it requires investigation. This is unusual.”

Personal Stories

Meg Lyons, in her early thirties, who has a professional career and now has moved away, said households deserved “absolute honesty and transparency” from the council.

The woman's 11-year-old sister, her sister, died on 24 June 2017 after being diagnosed with a rare bone cancer at the young age. The girl, who collected money for cancer charities, was “one of the most charming, humorous and kindest” people, she stated.

Her parent recollects the effect of the cessation of the industrial facility on the community, Lyons stated. “She said you could not position your fingers in ahead of you because [of] the particulate matter.”

“These issues have continued since I’ve probably been about my youth. This duration is unreasonable and it is irresponsibility toward the people of Corby.”

Previous Involvement

Lyons’s cousin, Maggie Mahon, was among numerous families connected to the legal case against the previous administration after her baby was had clubfoot. Her spouse, Derek, was among the lorry drivers participating in transporting materials from the steelworks. Their story was depicted in a television program, and illustrated Maggie beating the dust from her partner's pants.

Gaffney said the organization has been contacted by individuals with information who were responsible for the dumping of substances in the town.
